Boo! Learning from our mistakes

Porch Failure

You may recall we’ve been planning to paint our back porch. With a 4th of July BBQ looming on the horizon, Nate took control of the task. We planned two coats of paint and then to seal it, but we made some rookie mistakes.

The project was just a little discouraging. In fact, please don’t say the word “sealer” in Nate’s presence for at least a couple weeks.

BUT we are determined to learn from our mistakes and so can you. Here’s a few tips we’ve learned through the process.

What we learned about painting and sealing a concrete porch

Porch colors

1. Test your color choices.

No matter how well you clean it, there is going to be dirt and debris on the back porch so work with it. Find a color that will work (or hide) the dirt. We tested a bunch of colors before we purchased. After the paint dried, we did a happy dance over our color selection. Both of us are totally in love with the Martha Stewart Chianti color.

Porch Failure

2. Keep pets out of the paint.

This is simple to do when painting outside. Keep those pets inside. It still makes you feel guilty, but is much better than having to hogtie them down to get paint off their feet.

4. Follow the temperature guides.

It’s been a weird year here in Sacramento. Cooler temperatures and rain storms plagued us into June. But we still decided to paint our porch when the temps rose to the high 90s. Although this may not have been the root cause of our failures (see next item), I am sure it aggravated the situation. It’s best to keep the temperatures specified in mind before starting on a painting project. Behr suggests painting between temps of 50-90°F (10-32°C).

3 & 4. Research products you haven’t used before and if possible test before you apply.

This was out biggest problem. We didn’t research the best way to paint and seal our porch.

070511-151

Mistake #1 – I bought interior paint instead of exterior. This resulted in the paint taking longer to dry and not adhering well to the surface. We corrected this on paint coat #3 with much better results.

Mistake #2 – We applied sealer without testing it. This was our biggest mistake. We followed the directions on the back of the container, but we found out much later that the application has to be very thin to dry clear.

5. Accept failure and move on.

When problems happen figure out how to fix them. Sometimes a short term solution is the only one available.

For us, it meant sanding down the sealer with 400-grit sandpaper and applying a final coat of exterior paint. To make sure we had no more issues, Nate even hung up a contraption to keep the kumquat blossoms off the drying paint. It sort-of worked. :/

The project was a learning experience. We will probably try sealing the patio later this year, but not until we figure out the best method.

In the end, our 4th of July BBQ was a blast. We accessorized the porch with potted plants after the paint dried. Everyone was in the pool having a grand time. The porch color was a hit and no one noticed anything wrong with it!

Happy summer. Let’s eat.

School's Out....

I know today’s the official beginning of summer, but last Friday marked our own summer starter. After weeks of term papers and finals, Friday was the end of Nate’s school year. The end of school can be a stressful period in a teacher’s year. Our whole household was ecstatic to see that he was finally done and could relax!

So what did we do? We celebrated a whole bunch of things including Father’s Day at our house.

Saturday – Birthday Potluck

I got up early, ran errands and prepped all my proteins for Sunday’s BBQ. I made a rub for the steak and a marinade for the chicken. I also made up a spinach salad to bring with us to our evening birthday party for my brother-in-law.

Strawberries

Spinach & Strawberry Salad

Ingredients:

4 handfuls of baby Spinach
2 cups of sliced Strawberries
1/2 a English Cucumber sliced

Shallot Dressing:

1 shallot chopped
4 tbsp Apple Vinegar
4 tbsp Olive Oil
Salt and Pepper

Instructions:

Wash all produce well and let dry. Combine dressing in a blender to emulsify. Hull and thinly slice the strawberries. Peel the cucumber and slice into small sections. Combine all produce. Mix in dressing right before you eat.

Kevin’s birthday party was a great success. We had a great time watching the little cousins chase each other around.

Sunday – Father’s Day

Grilled Steak with Garlic Butter

This year we hosted Father’s Day. I was so excited to have our families over that I went a little crazy. I made a peach pie from scratch and then grilled a mixed plate of proteins. BUT I think the Dads really enjoyed my effort.

Father’s Day Menu

Grilled Rib-Eye Steaks with Mediterranean Rub (Recipe @ Epicurious)

Pretty Chicken Thighs (Marinade @ All Recipes)

Grilled Salmon

Oven Roasted Corn on the Cob (Tyler Florence via Food Network)

Green Salad

Summer Peach Pie w/ Vanilla and Cardamom (Epicurious)

Grilled Chicken Thighs IMG_7590

Grilling chicken is a new thing for me. I am more of a fish and red meat griller. I went with a bone-in chicken thigh because I’ve heard they are hard to screw up. There was a few flame flair-ups, but the chicken turned out juicy in the end.

Salmon on the Grill

I seasoned the salmon fillet with a little Montreal Seasoning and oil. Then placed it skin side down over low to medium heat. Once it was almost cooked through, I carefully flipped it to get the top a little crusty.

Corns on the Cob

Ten pieces of corn for $4.00? You bet. My mom suggested sticking them in the oven – husks and all – to roast them. Easiest decision I made all weekend. They came out perfect. We ate them with a chili lime butter I made up. Delicious.

peach pie, before baking

I really wanted to make a kick-ass fruit pie. Unfortunately, my crust wasn’t cooperating. I still feel good with the end product especially with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side.

So there you have it. Weekend of food, love and summer. Summer, summer, summer! So glad you are here!!

And as a bonus for those who made it all the way through this length post – here’s video of Nate’s toy helicopter.

Plans for summer

With the sun (finally) shining, I find myself grinning ear to ear. Guess I truly am a California girl at heart.

In celebration of June and this glorious weather, here’s a few things I plan on trying this summer.

SantaCruz

Bike to work

When its hot, the last place I want to be is in a car. Time to bust out the bike instead.

I have been talking about biking to work this since we moved in, but have only done it twice. Goal for the summer is to commute by bike at least once a week. It will be a fun adventure and it’s better for me, the environment and my checkbook.

iphone_053011 075

Grill everything

I mean everything. Burgers, Tri-Tip, Chicken, Summer Squash, Eggplant, Peppers, Nectarines & Peaches, Pineapple, Pizza. You name it, we grill it.

When the temperature tops 100 degrees there is no reason to turn on the oven. Grill everything outside instead.

Ice Ice Pops!!

Homemade popsicles

After years of store bought popsicles, it’s time to learn to make my own. Figure someone can teach me how to make the gourmet or adult kinds so I bought a book and molds to learn with.

Movie Mob - Drive-in Movie 7

Outdoor movie night

Host a movie night with a classic projected on our barn doors. People can sit on our new patio or even in the pool. Maybe enjoy a cold beverage or homemade popsicle? Doesn’t this sound perfect on that incredibly hot night that never cools down? Can’t wait to try it out.

A few new ideas mixed in with the summer classics like camping and water slides sounds like pure awesomeness to me. Time to break out the cut-offs and the flip flops!

Birthday kitties

Napping

Loki and Pixel are two years old today. They are now proper adult cats, not kitties, but it’s hard for me to write that down.

Here’s a look back at the cats’ first two years.

5215_123177033471_603278471_2477102_328247_n

The family who gave them to us had a few photos of the litter they shared. Not sure if any of this kittens are Loki or Pixel. They had quite a few other siblings!

5215_123177048471_603278471_2477103_3961889_n

There’s a good chance this is Loki. Gosh, they were so tiny once!

summer_ 239

They lived with their mom until we picked them up around 8 weeks old.

summer_ 131

First they lived in our bedroom.

summer_ 275

We wanted them acclimated to us before they were allowed in the rest of the house.

091409_ 056

I think it’s rather obvious how much we love these two furballs.

091409_ 058

Loki is the comic relief. He always makes us laugh.

Sadie and Loki hanging out

Nate also calls him his champion. The little guy tries to be very brave (look at him standing up to that scary dog) and has a heart of gold.

summer_ 246

Pixel is our Allison Reynolds (Ally Sheedy in Breakfast Club) character.

Pixel playing with the water glass - left paw

Our girl is a weirdo, but she can be a sweetheart when she wants to be.

Reindeer kitty

Loki also has the patience to deal with one of my shortcomings – my love of cat hats.

052311

Unlike Pixel who only complies under extreme situations. And trust me, I usually pay for it later.

091409_ 103

Adopting siblings may have been the smartest thing we ever did.

112910 054

They truly love each other. They also love to play together.

Cats in the rain

Luckily for us, the cats also seem interested in our many home projects.

091409_ 128

Pixel is fascinated by whatever we are doing…

Loki in the ferns

…while Loki is more interested in causing trouble.

Pixel and Loki

These cats really are part of our little family. They are such great companions for us.

Feline Friday: Sleeping

From naps with Nate…

Kittens: Pixel and Loki

We are very lucky cat owners. I can’t even remember what we did without them. Happy Birthday Loki and Pixel!!

Memorable moments of April

A new feature of sorts. I want to begin to document life moments that might not otherwise make it onto our blog. So here are four of my favorite memories & one regret of April.

*****

Easter Sunday

Moses and Andrea

This year, the Easter holiday marked the first anniversary of my Grandma’s death. My family congregated at my Uncle Terry’s – the same place we were when we received the news of her passing last year. Although the day was bittersweet, I knew Grandma would be so excited the family was together celebrating the holiday. So that’s what we did. :)

Another highlight of the day was seeing how happy my little cousin Moses was after realizing he is now officially taller than me. (Let’s not tell him that at 5’2″, most people are taller than me. ) It’s an important landmark for him so we made sure to document it with a photo.

Eagle Cam

eagle21

Watching the eagle family grow from this last month has been so much fun. If you haven’t checked it out, you really should.

*****

The End of Mustache March

030111-130

Now don’t get me wrong. I love that Nate is brave enough to sport a mustache every March. It is not for the weak. BUT that doesn’t mean I am in love with the actual stache he sports all month. So thank you April for coming right after March so Nate can begin to grow a goatee back.

*****

A Royal Wedding

Watching the Royal Wedding 3

I will happily admit that I got up at 2:30am on April 22 to watch the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton live.

Royal Wedding watching

Although, I really wasn’t interested in the entire media bonanza surrounding the event, I loved the pageantry of the actual ceremony. It was beautiful and well worth the effort of getting up to watch!

Hand Wound

Hand update

Cutting my hand was by far the lowest part of the month. You can see from the photo, it has healed up quite nicely once I got the stitches out. Again, I count my blessings for not doing any serious damage to my hand. I am very, very lucky.
