State of the House 2012
2011 was the year I fell in love with YouTube. Not just cat videos or crazy stunts, but vlogs and video tutorials. It got me thinking about adding videos back into my chronicles. There’s a lot of moments I’d like to record of my life right now. Video just gives another layer that writing and photographs just can’t capture.
So my first video project is my take on the annual State of the Union (or the Governor of California’s State of the State). This is my State of the House.
I am breaking it into two parts. Part one is a video snapshot of what the house and our life looks like right now. Part two will be what an outline of projects and events we plan on tackling this year. I hope to do this every January to show how our home organically changes with time.
So here’s Part one. (Note – I didn’t edit this at all. That’s something I will work on for future videos.)
Our House Today – a visual report
Feline Friday: Candid
I really like this photo of Pixel. It’s a good representation of one side of her personality. She is quite the little busybody. I think this candid photo catches her meddling rather well.
Cat scratch
It’s funny the things I get annoyed at purchasing.
Laundry detergent because I only want to buy it on sale.
Cilantro because the last batch went bad before I used it.
Coffee beans because it’s usually when I am all out and cranky.
But more than anything, I hate buying something that should have replaceable parts, but doesn’t.
Enter the mighty cat scratching post. It keeps the cats’ claws away from our furniture (most of the time) and is therefore a necessary evil in out house.
Regardless of its usefulness, it is perhaps one of the ugliest things in our house. I’ve looked for a better looking post, but it doesn’t seem to exist so we have two inexpensive versions from Target. They work out great for the cats, but when the carpet gets all worn out and grungy, I wanted to replace it. But I can’t. They don’t make replacement parts for the posts. It’s very short-sighted on the manufacturer and it just drives me crazy!
So I got thinking and decided to make my own replacement carpet post out of a utility mat, glue and staples. A fraction of the price of a brand new scratch post. And while I was at it, I gave the post a makeover at the same time with some dark green spray paint.
I started by buying a dark gray utility mat for $3.00.

Then I took apart the old post.
Using the old carpet as a pattern piece, I measured the width of the carpet tile.
Then I cut the mat with a straight edge and a utility knife.
Next using dark green spray paint I had on hand, I darkened the current post stand and topper to match the dark gray utility mat.
Once the paint was dry it was time to assemble the parts.
I stapled one end of the carpet piece of the post and then used some tacky glue to keep the carpet in place before stapling down the other end.
Then, I clamped the carpet post with a bunch of rubber bands until the glue dried.
I let the glue dry overnight before I reassembled the post. Voila! The cat scratch post is ready for action. I spent less than $5.00 on the makeover and I have left over supplies for the next time I need to replace the carpet post. Not a bad deal at all.
Feline Friday: Cat Mountain
I feel asleep watching TV the other night.
Nate was there to document the two cats who decided to join me…
…then I woke up.
Like my hat? It’s on sale at American Eagle.
Challenging me.
Like a lot of people, I like to start the new year off with a clean slate. This includes a little detox of the diet, a little more emphasis on exercise and a deep clean of the house.
This year I decided to find a couple challenges to inspire me. Here’s the two I decided to run with.
1. Throw out fifty things
The first challenge I found was the Throw out fifty things started by Gail Blanke. I heard about this through Jess and thought this would be a great way to break through the clutter.
Gail has a nifty worksheet that walks you through how to purge your home room by room.
I’ve been working through my house during my winter break and here’s the fifty things I came up with.
1-9) Books 10) Microwave Candle Wax Kit 11) Index Card Holder 12-13) Notebooks 14-18) According Files and Organizers 19-20) Tea Cup Set and Teapot 21) Shower Caddy 22) Reindeer Ears 23-27) Metal Canisters and Cup 28) Cutting Board 29) Orchid Pot 30) Christmas Mr. Potato Head 31) A box of Glade candles 32) Ten Nail Polishes 33-34) Two candle holders 35) Booties 36) Purple cardigan 37) Sunglasses 38) Cat toy* 39) Bunch of Skin Care Items* 40) Bunch of Makeup* 41) Mouth Wash* 42) Hair Protector* 43) Expired Medication* 44) Old phone charger 45-48) Three board games 49) Rug* 50) Glass Bowl2. Project 10 Pan
Maybe you are like me and have a full cabinet of skincare and makeup products. I bought a lot of stuff to try before our Bath Crasher’s appearance and I don’t use them on a regular basis. So to work through “my stash” my second challenge is Project 10 Pan. It is a commitment to finish up 10 beauty products before buying anything else that is unnecessary.
I couldn’t find the exact origin of this challenge, but it is very popular in the online beauty community. To see more about the variations of the challenge, just google “project 10 pan.”
Looking through my products, I actually came up with twelve I want to use up.
