Plant ReCon
Before our afternoon rainstorm, I did some research at my local garden center for our front and back yards. Here’s a few photos from my iPhone.
In shades of pink…
… and yellow
I am looking for bright flowers especially in pinks and purples. I love Nicotinia, but have just seen it in white and light pink – never bright colors. I definitely want some of those.
Rock Purslane
This is the first time I have seen Rock Purslane. I want to research it more before purchasing.
Lantana
Lantana is a great plant. We already have an orange one. I’d love to get more.
Monthly Farm Box
Thursday morning we received our all vegetable farm box. This is the second time we got a monthly farm box to supplement our own veg garden and what we purchase at farmers markets and the grocery store.
Contents:
2 bunches of Nantes Carrots
1 bunch of Snap peas
1 bunch of Radishes
1 bunch of Fresh Cilantro
1 lb of Bok Choy
1 bunch of Broccoli Rabe
1 bunch of Spring Onions
1 lb Fresh Fava Beans
1/2 lb King Trumpet Mushrooms
Its always exciting for me to try out new produce. I’ve never worked with the King Trumpet Mushrooms, nor the Fava Beans.
From the archive: Air Conditioner Cover
I realized after my last post on the bedroom, I never explained how we made our DIY air conditioning cover. It’s a simple process and I love how it looks.
The Before:
Here’s the ugly air conditioner when we purchased the house. I love how the plug is the full cord’s length away from the unit. You wouldn’t want that to be inconspeutious.
Unfortunately, we couldn’t just remove it. We wanted to keep the air conditioning in the room for super hot California nights.
The After:
Our concept was to build a piece of art we could hang over the AC unit and disguise it. See it? It’s on the left.
We built two frames. One fits inside the other. The outer one became the frame for the artwork. The inner one became the artwork.
Here’s how it went down.
Materials:
Wood for Outer Frame
Wood for Inner Frame
Fabric of Choice (I used a cotton quilting fabric)
Paint
Sandpaper
Nails
Staple Gun
Directions:
Step One
Measure the air conditioning unit and figure out the dimensions of your frame. You want the frame large enough to have a inch or two of clearance on all sides. We built an outer frame that was 29 1/8″ x 19 3/4″.
Step Two
The outer frame was built out of 5.5″ x 1″ pieces of wood. We used two lengths of wood to build our rectangle – 2 @ 17″ and 2 @ 28 1/8″. Assemble the piece with a little glue and nails.
Step Three
Build inner frame out of thinner wood – we used 1″ x 1/2″. The inner frame will be a little flimsy, but this is okay because you want this to fit snuggly in the outer frame. We added two lengths for support along the inside.
Step Four
Time to stretch your fabric over the inner frame. The most important thing to remember when stretching your fabric is to work from the middle outwards and in opposites. So start on one side and staple a couple times in the middle. Move to the opposite side, pull the fabric taught, and staple the middle in place with a few staples. Repeat with the other two edges. Continue stapling back and forth until you all four edges at tight. At the corners, fold the edges of the canvas neatly and staple the one on top of the other.
It’s okay if your frame isn’t not totally square when you are finished. Once its installed in the bigger outer frame it will maintain its shape.
Step Five
Sand and paint the outer frame before inserting the inner one. Let the paint dry overnight.
Step Six
The next day, carefully slip the inner frame into the outer frame. Secured it into place with a few nails.
Step Seven
Install two L brackets slightly above the air conditioner unit to hang the frame on. This allows it to be easily removed when we want to use the unit.
And there you go – a simple way to hide a ugly air conditioner!
New tool for the belt
I have one rule I follow while shopping at the home improvement store.
Do not buy tools or materials that will not be used for the current project.
Otherwise, I’d be picking up every new fangled tool I come across and I just don’t have the budget for that.
A drill mixer attachment has been on my wish list for quite some time, but I was not going to spend the five dollars on it unless I had a use.
So when I needed to use some old house paint that had separated, I finally had a reason to go buy a mixer. Yahoo!
I purchased the Husky All Steel Spiral Mixer. It can mix up to a five gallon container of which seemed more practical than buying the half gallon size. Not only will it mix up paint, it also will come in hand for all our future concrete work.
After attaching the mixer to the drill just insert it into the paint and let the drill do the work. Trust me. It’s so much easier than using a paint stick on separated paint. I already tried that and it didn’t work out well.
30 seconds later….VoilĂ ! Paint’s ready to go.
Now I can paint under our doors and windows along the porch to match the rest of the exterior. Success!
Birthday kitties
Loki and Pixel are two years old today. They are now proper adult cats, not kitties, but it’s hard for me to write that down.
Here’s a look back at the cats’ first two years.
The family who gave them to us had a few photos of the litter they shared. Not sure if any of this kittens are Loki or Pixel. They had quite a few other siblings!
There’s a good chance this is Loki. Gosh, they were so tiny once!
They lived with their mom until we picked them up around 8 weeks old.
First they lived in our bedroom.
We wanted them acclimated to us before they were allowed in the rest of the house.
I think it’s rather obvious how much we love these two furballs.
Loki is the comic relief. He always makes us laugh.
Nate also calls him his champion. The little guy tries to be very brave (look at him standing up to that scary dog) and has a heart of gold.
Pixel is our Allison Reynolds (Ally Sheedy in Breakfast Club) character.
Our girl is a weirdo, but she can be a sweetheart when she wants to be.
Loki also has the patience to deal with one of my shortcomings – my love of cat hats.
Unlike Pixel who only complies under extreme situations. And trust me, I usually pay for it later.
Adopting siblings may have been the smartest thing we ever did.
They truly love each other. They also love to play together.
Luckily for us, the cats also seem interested in our many home projects.
Pixel is fascinated by whatever we are doing…
…while Loki is more interested in causing trouble.
These cats really are part of our little family. They are such great companions for us.
From naps with Nate…
…to helping me out in the kitchen.
We are very lucky cat owners. I can’t even remember what we did without them. Happy Birthday Loki and Pixel!!
